Global Talk # 2: On a secret mission? A discussion about the role of the Sustainable Development Goals in education and the political dimensions of ESD

04.12.2020 14:30  – 16:00

ESD wants to accompany learners on their way to becoming committed, responsible citizens, which should lead to a Great Transformation. At the same time, when dealing with Fridays for Future, for example, we see that the school system quickly reaches its limits here, because everyone involved is exposed to different interests that pursue different political goals.

The SDGs are also based on political interests that have been adopted within the framework of the United Nations. Therefore they are not to be confused with pedagogically and didactically developed educational goals. In addition, they are accused of a western view that does not sufficiently take into account the different concerns of countries in the Global South.

As part of this event, we will therefore discuss the visible and invisible normative foundations of education for sustainable development and the SDGs, connections in the context of principles of political education and apparent contradictions between theoretical considerations and actual school practice. A special focus is on the intercultural dialogue between the participating countries Georgia and Germany.

Date: Dec 4, 2020
Time: 14:30-16:00 CET

Guests: Teachers from the urban area of Tbilisi in Georgia who work in the field of political education; Martin Thalhammer is program coordinator at the Civic Education Teachers Forum (CETF) in Tbilisi.
